Contemplation Room in the Luwte West Fries Gasthuis

A special space in the midst of all the hustle and bustle that the West Fries Gasthuis entails. It is a space for contemplation and prayer, being together, meditation, conversation and celebration. A nice place for everyone regardless of his or her religion and background. A place where there is room for silence, joy and sorrow.
The space is located on the ground floor in the new building of the West Fries Gasthuis and is adjacent to the hallway at the inner garden, close to the central hall.

”Zes jaar geleden maakten we het ontwerp voor de nieuwe centrale hal van het WFG en waren nauw betrokken bij de bouw. This led to an involvement with the WFG ”.

The request to also think about designing a “quiet room” for the WFG was received with enthusiasm We were aware of the complexity of the assignment. How to deal with, for example, all different beliefs and religions? We have designed the space in such a way that every person, regardless of his or her age, religious preference or background, feels welcome to be allowed to be in present in their own chosen way.
To achieve this, a conscious choice has been made to omit religiously grounded symbolism. Instead, a comprehensive work of art has been created that everyone can connect with.”

De stilteruimte wordt gekenmerkt door zowel openheid als geborgenheid.
Openheid zie je terug in de entree.
You see openness in the entrance. The light from the inner garden enters through the open character of the entrance and is pleasantly filtered on the side by the red cedar slats that are placed on both sides. Close to the entrance, the slats are in such a position that a view is possible. As one goes deeper into space they close and offer shelter there. The back part of the room is marked by a curved back wall.

The back wall, in its entirety, is a connecting work of art that strengthens the space in its meaningful but also comforting function. On the curved, subtly lit wall, wooden flowers swarming across the wall form an inspiring image. Each flower is made up of wooden blocks of red cedar sawn into a number of different angles and faces. Each block has a hole where written notes can be placed. The notes can be used by every visitor to express a wish, word of thanks, drawing, thought or experience. The notes are then left in the artwork.

All notes will be carefully kept.
Once a year new resembling flower shapes are made from the notes by processing them into paper pulp and pouring them into a mold with epoxy.
